With kids back to school and the weather cooling down cold season is in full swing! All day long, kids are exposed to germs and viruses- when touching a class mate, sharing toys or even petting the neighbors dog at the bus stop. Once germs are on your little ones hands they can quickly make them sick! The whole process can happen in seconds and cause a cold that can last for days, weeks or even longer.
I can honestly not remember the last time one of my littles was sick because we take every single precautionary measure to avoid germs- including teaching our kids proper hand washing techniques. The only way we were able to teach the kids to wash their hands properly, often was to make hand washing fun!
How do you make hand washing fun you ask? Well read on my dear, read on…
A Special Step Stool: First and foremost you have to make sure your little one can wash their hands. Most young kids can’t reach the sink just yet. Hunching over the sink to reach can be painful for little arms which makes hand washing not fun. Investing in a ten dollar step stool to keep in your bathroom can help with this problem. Just the extra 12-18 inches most stools give kids allows them to wash their hands more comfortably and more effectively.
Great Smelling Soap: Using a hand soap that smells good can also be a great way to encourage kids to wash. We use Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day hand soaps because they are chocked full of plant-derived ingredients and essential oils that are powerful against dirt and grime and they keep little hands smelling good for an super long time. My kids know that when they can not smell the Geranium on their hands anymore they need to rewash.
Sing A Song: Once your child knows how to wash their hands, they need to learn how long to wash their hands. We made it just a tad bit more fun to wash hands by encouraging the littles to sing their ABC’s while they wash their hands. Once the alphabet is all done, they can dry their hands.

I have my kids wash their hands all the time too and I think it really helps cut down on the times we are sick. I will have to try the Mrs. Meyers hand soap tho’, the smell sounds like it would make hand washing a little more enjoyable! :o)
