Did you know that each and every year young children and babies suffer from 6 – 8 colds? That is per year! A crazy high number that really scares me with all recent recalls of children’s cold medicine. My pediatrician actually recommended that when my littles get sick I do not give them cold medicine. Instead I try a cool mist humidifier, saline nasal solution and lots of tissues or a nasal aspirator to make them feel better before resorting to medicine.
Humidifiers help with overall cold and flu symptoms by making breathing through the nose much easier. Using a humidifier each night will loosen nasal congestion, prevent nosebleeds and moisten sinus and nasal passages. It will also help ease dry coughs, sooth itchy dry skin, moisten chapped lips and prevent nose bleeds. We choose to use Crane Adorable Animal Humidifiers because the kids absolutely love them. Their fun characters brighten up their rooms and they look less like a machine and more like a decoration, which is a plus for a child’s bedroom.
Once all that nasal congestion is loosened, a nasal aspirator allows me to suck all the boogers out and leaves my child feeling much more refreshed and able to sleep better and longer which helps them get better faster.

I couldn’t agree more. We LOVE using a cool mist humidifier for most of the year, and it’s so nice to avoid those medications that I don’t trust anyway. Why use them if you don’t really need them?
The mist is great for your home during the winter, too, since running the heat dries out the air so much.
