Yellowberry – The Perfect First Bra

Disclosure: The products below were provided compliments of Yellowberry.

For me, there was a sad feeling that came over me when I realized my nine year old needed her first bra.  My baby was blossoming into a young lady and I wasn’t ready for it.  I ignored it for awhile, she wore tanks with built in bras under her shirts and after a couple weeks we went bra shopping. I wasn’t just searching for a bra, I was searching for the perfect first bra.

After about an hour and a half of looking at different stores and trying to convince myself that what I saw on the racks was ok and what girls were wearing now, we left empty handed and back to square one.  I just could not bring myself to buy a beginner bra for her with padding- At nine years old what are you trying to lift up?  It’s not the road I wanted to go down with her, she was still a little girl and did not need to wearing push up trainer bras with lace.  The only other options we found we thin fabrics that really gave no coverage for her blossoming buds.

After researching the internet I came across the Yellowberry Company.  I browsed their website and was immediate impressed with the design of the bras, each bra had a super cute name like Meadowlark, Chickadee, Budding Berry or Tweetheart and the story behind the company was something that I wanted to support.  It seemed as if Megan, the founder of Yellowberry, took the words right out of my mouth.Yellowberry logoWe measured her according to the website instructions and ordered 3 of their bras that are designed as a “my first bra”, the Pipit, Scout and Ladybug. The fit of each bra was perfect. The Perfect First BraThey came in the mail in a cute little box with a bright yellow ribbon wrapped around it.  Isabella was super excited to open it.  Each bra was like an individual present wrapped in bright yellow tissue paper.Yellowberry packagingAll the bras are seamlessly made, have no scratchy tags and boast the Yellowberry symbol on the back of the bra.  All their bras are made with breathable high quality cotton or jersey fabric, adjustable straps for the best fit and an extra thick lining for the best coverage (without the unneeded padding).

I let her wear them for a couple weeks to see what she thought without me asking questions.  When I asked her if she had a favorite, without hesitation she immediately pointed to the Ladybug Marshmallow.  She preferred the Ladybug because it was a higher cut (higher across chest) then the other two.  She said they are all “basically the same” and likes that they are “not itchy”.

One thing that makes the bras extra special are the sayings inside the bra.  These six different “stitched in tags” offer motto’s such as “Water the flowers everyday” or “love the outdoors and nature”.  These sayings are placed inside each bra to honor the memory of Megan’s little sister, Caroline and her life-loving mantra.  It is Yellowberry’s way to remind their “berries” to enjoy herself and the world around her.Yellowberry Bra LabelThe Yellowberry logo is also on the outside of each bra, which I think is super cute.Yellowberry logoI machine washed in cold and line dried.  There was no shrinking or changing shape.  Fabric looks perfect and seams aren’t coming apart.

If you are looking for a my first bra for your little girl that is not too risque but still very pretty and will be special then look no further!  I highly recommend Yellowberry. Yellowberry also offers products such as leggings, loungewear, underwear and just recently added swimwear!

Those days of bra shopping for my daughters are long over for me but I know finding the right one isn’t easy. These look perfect for a 9 year old and her first bra.

Perfect first bra! My daughter would love these!

  5. My granddaughter started to bud over the summer and shopping for a bra that was appropriate for a young girl wasn’t as straight forward as I thought it would be. I wish I would have known about these. As her needs change, Yellowberry will be the first place I go. Thanks.

My granddaughter has started wearing bras this year and she doesn’t like the bras she is wearing. The straps are always falling down and they just aren’t very comfortable. These bras sound and look really nice and are ones worth trying. Thanks for the review….

This is great for a first bra. I wish they had this when my girls were younger.

  8. Oh this is so neat! i love the little saying inside! I have to remember these when the time comes!

  9. Terrible customer service. I could have purchased the same bra on Amazon and known that the return policy would be easy, but I chose to support Yellowberry instead. What a mistake. Yes, the bra came in a pretty box with a yellow ribbon, but my daughter didn’t like it the bra at all. She said it was much too tight and uncomfortable. I packaged it back up right away, contacted the company about sending a postage label for my return, and found out that they would keep a large portion of the cost of the bra. This is unacceptable. The bra is still in the box, and I’m still waiting to hear back from someone regarding making this an exchange vs. a return (if that’s my only option and I’ll lose money otherwise, I figured I’d order something else.) No one has gotten back to me. I do a lot of online shopping, and this has been one of the most negative experiences I have had.

We ordered several items from Yellowberry and were unhappy with every single one. I honestly have no idea what the hype is about. The ladybug bamboo bra pilled immediately and is incredibly bulky and uncomfortable. My daughter was really excited about that one because she has other bamboo underwear that are super soft and have last seemingly forever. This was a no go. It’s at the bottom of the pile for emergencies. We also ordered the Chickadee bra. That one has thin elastic straps that roll up, making it both uncomfortable, as well as unsightly under certain clothes. The kimber pant, which we got for free, looks adorable, but they didn’t bother sewing the elastic down, so the waistband rolls up. The new flip bra looks nice, but is significantly smaller than the others. It’s sitting now, waiting to be given away. Sure, I could’ve sent it back, but being a busy single mom, I forgot. A single brand should not have such huge variations in size. Our last item, the shell camisole, is very bulky making it hard to wear under most clothes. The built in shelf bra is also incredibly tight and uncomfortable.

I hate saying negative things about a company, but I also really dislike shelling out a lot of money on low quality items. Yellowberry needs to up their game and actually produce quality items, instead of relying on their story and hype to sell their products.
