About a week ago Ethan came home from school more excited than I had seen him in a while. He quickly dug around in his backpack and handed me a note from his teacher about the upcoming 100th day of school! Ethan had to find 100 of something and bring them in to share with the class. There were a few ideas, like 100 cheerios on a string, or 100 beads in a bottle- however I wanted to do something special with him that his teacher would be really impressed with! It just so happens that exact day, Heather from Our Kids Mom posted an amazing melted crayon art project she did with her daughter and I knew that is what we would do!
We headed to AC Moore to collect our supplies. It cost us around 20.00, with the purchase of a hot glue gun because we did not have one. All you need for this project is a 14×18 canvas, 100 crayons, a glue gun and a hair dryer.
The whole point of the 100th day of school is to encourage your child to count to 100. So first, I had Ethan pick 100 crayons. Then we split them in to two piles of 50.
Gluing them on was a bit to tricky for Ethan to do. But he did help by picking what crayon went next.
We found that putting the glue on the canvas first, then the crayon onto the glue was the easiest way to keep them straight.
After we finished one side we took a little break. Each side took about twenty minutes and because Ethan is only 5 he got a bit bored just handing me colors. Once both sides were done we let it dry completely for about 30 minutes.
Then came the fun part. The blowing part! I highly suggest you do this outside or on some sort of sheet/table cloth that you don’t mind getting dirty. There will be wax everywhere!
We concentrated all of our blow dryer heat at the tips of the crayon so the pretty labels remained intact. I was amazed at how proud Ethan was of his project. He even exclaimed it was the BEST 100 things he had ever seen!
Wow, I wish I had seen this.My grandson celebrated his but they only had just as you mentioned, the cereal and also beaded necklaces. I love this idea and need to pin. Thanks for sharing!
have to do 100 day project with nephew tomorrow. this is a cool idea
That’s awesome! I might try a similar project just to thin out or broken crayon bucket a bit.
That is so cool! I’m gonna have to keep this in mind next time dd needs a cool project for school!
This is awesome! My daughter had to make a t-shirt with one hundred items on it and that was hard enough. I’d really be scrambling if I had to come up with a project entirely on my own. I’ll be keeping this in mind for next year!
