A trip to Virginia Beach can get very expensive, very fast. The following five places are free to visit and provided my family hours of entertainment even with young children.
Virginia Beach Fishing Pier: This very popular attraction and fishing spot was a huge hit with my kids. The pier is located on 15th street and the boardwalk. The approximately 1,000-foot-long pier is in the heart of the resort area. It has a bait-and-tackle shop with rod-and-reel rentals, and a snack bar/restaurant. No fishing license required and it is open 24 hours from Memorial Day to Labor Day. We grabbed our poles and spent a few hours here. We did not catch anything awesome, but watched a few people reel in some awesome stuff.Sandbridge Beach: Considered to be quiet and family-oriented, the Sandbridge Beach is an alternative to the very busy Virginia Beach. The waves are normally easy and the water is relatively shallow, giving even young children a swimming experience. This was the only beach we were able to find shells on, it seems like all the others were picked over.Neptune’s Park: Located on Atlantic Avenue, Neptune’s Park is a place everyone that comes to Virginia Beach needs to at least see (and pay tribute to the sea god!!). The park provides views of the beach from the board walk and a large statue of Neptune standing guard over a large play ground. In addition to the large 34 foot statue, the park also offers free live bands almost all summer long.Indoor Interactive Play Area: Located at 701 Lynnhaven Parkway is the Lynhaven Mall. Inside it is a huge play area tha is perfect to visit to escape the heat, rain or to just be able to keep the kids contained for a while.Mount Trashmore Park: Located at 310 Edwin Drive the world-renowned Mount Trashmore Park encompasses 165 acres. At nearly 26,000 square feet, the playground is comprised of three distinct play areas built on a rubber surface: a giant play structure that includes a multitude of slides, elevated walkways, climbers and more; an area that has swings for all ages; and an area comprised of a variety of climbing structures. Badminton equipment, corn hole boards and bags, footballs, frisbees, horseshoes, rubber playground balls, soccer balls, volleyballs, volleyball nets and wheelchairs can be checked out of the park office for free with a driver license or other form of photo identification.
