Our RV has some amazing, top of the line things inside it, however the bunk bed mattresses are lousy. To be honest they really aren’t even mattresses, they are really just a thin layer of dense foam more meant for the top of a chair or a rarely futon. This means I have had to come up with a few creative solutions to make the kids love their bunk beds as much as their old beds and make sure they are just as comfortable.
Memory Foam Pad- The first thing I needed to do was make them comfortable. The kids were waking up with sore necks and backs and that just wasn’t good at all. I was worried this was going to be very hard to achive, but in reality it was super easy, affordable too. I simply measured the “mattress” that came on the bunk, bought an over sized queen foam pad and then cut it to fit the mattress perfectly. It took me maybe twenty minutes and has made a world of difference in the comfort of all the bunk beds inside the RV.
Night time Protection- A comfortable bed, is a dry bed. At home we keep waterproof mattress pad on the all the kids beds. We planned to do that in the RV as well, however like I mentioned above the beds are an odd size and normal pads don’t fit snugly enough to protect leaks. Our solution to this problem is GoodNites TruFits. Bedwetting struggles have really hindered the kids confidence, none of them want to wear a baby diaper to bed, however waking up to an accident really crushes self-esteem. We picked up a GoodNites TruFit Starter Pack at CVS (used this coupon) and have not worried about leaks since. They are not a diaper-type of product, but rather a soft fabric underwear that works with disposable inserts. They are even machine washable! All my kids wake up confident that no matter what, their bed is dry.
Favorite Soft Things- The kids keep all their favorite soft things on their bunk beds. Blankets, pillows, stuffed animals- anything they can cuddle with goes and stays up on their bed, even when the bed is folded up and we are traveling. This allows them to have their own space and the freedom to sort their stuff however they want as long as it stays on the bed.
Bed Rails: The last thing I want to have happen in the middle of the night is a kid fall out of bed. The bunk beds are pretty high up in the air and we still have little ones that roll while they sleep. I contemplated how to fix this problem for far to long before I bit the bullett and bought a normal bed rail. It solved all our problems and we have never had a child fall out of bed.
Darkening Blinds: At home each of the kids bedroom windows had light filtering curtains on them. We cut the old curtains down to size and took them with us. This allows their room to stay dark and because of this I find they sleep much better and longer, too.

These are great tips for anyone who travels with kids and has an RV!
