2013 Kia Soul

The 2013 Kia Soul is an unmistakably stylish, practical, and affordable car that blends elements of a crossover, a station wagon, and a mini van into a single vehicle! The Kia Soul is an inexpensive, roomy, useful, and distinctive looking vehicle that offers you everything you need in a new vehicle! The Soul I tested below is the Soul ! with all the extras, painted a beautiful Molten red with a sticker price of $23,575. We borrowed the Kia for a week long test drive and shuttled kids, groceries and went on road trips to test the family friendliness of it and I was honestly quite surprised at how much I loved it!

2013 Kia SoulJust like the Kia’s geared to younger drivers- rappin’ hampsters the Kia trim names are fun. The Kia Soul is available in three very different trims. The base, the + and the !. The different trim options are one of my favorite features of the Soul because you can really get the exact feature you want depending on which trim you go with!

The base model’s includes 15-inch steel wheels, full power accessories, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, cloth upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel,  trip computer, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a four-speaker sound system with CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. The optional automatic transmission gives the base Soul keyless entry, rear privacy glass and cruise control.

The Soul+ includes all the above plus 16-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors,  a leather-wrapped steering wheel and two additional speakers. The available Audio Upgrade package adds automatic headlights, a rearview camera, the Uvo hands-free media player interface and an eight-speaker Infinity sound system with HD radio and tricolor speaker lights. The optional Eco package adds fuel-saving features like an automatic stop/start system, an upgraded battery and low-rolling-resistance tires. Also available is a sunroof bundled with foglamps.

The top-of-the-line Soul! adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, upgraded headlights,  power-folding outside mirrors, foglamps, LED daytime running lights, houndstooth pattern two-tone upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and the Audio Upgrade package. Optional on the ! is a Premium package, which adds keyless ignition/entry, leather upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climatic control and a navigation system with real-time traffic and a touchscreen interface.

The many different trims and options means there is a Kia Soul for everyone!

2013 Kia SoulBelieve it or not the Kia Soul really does not take up any more space than a mid size car. However it’s tall roof and boxy shape give the inside a minivan feel that allows enough room for up to five, The Soul’s cargo area doesn’t look huge and to be honest, it isn’t. There is more than enough room for three car seats in the back seat, but no room for a double stroller in the trunk. The Soul offers 19.3 cu.-ft. of space behind its rear seat and 53.4 cu.-ft. of space available with the seats folded. With the rear seats up I was able to fit a Britax B-Agile in.

2013 Kia SoulSpeaking of three seats… I was able to install three sets in the back seat. The Soul has three top teathers so three convertible seats, while a tight fit- can fit in the back seat. This makes the Kia Soul perfect for families with young kids.

2013 Kia Soul

The Soul !  has a pretty spiffy looking inside, thanks to the standard two-tone color scheme. The dash is covered in hard plastic, but the texture and low shine level give it a pretty distinct look inside, with out becoming looking cheesy.

2013 Kia Soul

The NHTSA gives the Soul a 4-Star overall safety rating in crash tests and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety called the Soul a “Top Safety Pick” in 2012.  Features like the front and rear crumple zones, hill start control, electronic brake force distribution, full length side curtain air bags and dual front advanced air bags let you know safety was important to Kia when they designed the Soul.

The Kia Soul promises 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. During my week long drive I averaged 27.8 mpg, which is not bad for a crossover! This is way more than our mini van, and .2 less than our car.

Special thanks to Kia for letting me test drive the Soul for a week.

I like the color and the amount of rear space in this Kia

  2. We took this vehicle for a test drive a cuple years ago. We really liked it. We were looking for something just a little bit bigger though. I love that all 3 of the car seats fit in the back seat that is awesome!

  3. Lori Davis says:

I’ve been checking this car out at a local dealer. I really like it. Now to just do more research and make sure it will be safe for my family! Thanks for the helpful review!

  4. This would make the perfect work car for my husband! Great on gas yet can fit our entire family in the event of an emergency. Since we’re already happy Kia owners, the Soul would be a especially nice.

  5. I love how this looks on the outside, but i never knew the interior was so neat too. It just looks so SLEEK!

  6. I like that this car is affordable and safe

  7. I drove one of these as a rental for a few days and I loved it. Very comfortable and roomy. Great review!

  8. Sandy Cain says:

I’m not sure why this catches my eye – maybe it’s the boxy shape? But here’s something about this car that I love! I’d really be happy driving around in this!

  9. ashley odaniell says:

The color is cute and so is the entire car! Perfect size for me!

  10. Karen Glatt says:

I did not think that the Kia Soul was going to be that expensive. I will have to buy a car in the next 2 or 3 years, but I think this car is a little expensive. I would buy it used maybe a couple of years old. I like the color and the interior and it gets 26 miles to the gallon. I need a car with higher gas mileage. But I think that this is a great car!

  11. I saw one of these out shopping yesterday and was surprised at how compact it is in person. I really like that it seats five. We will definitely give Kia a look the next time we replace a car.

i like the color and the amount of space it has,

  13. I can fit my double stroller in very carefully. (a MiniCity Select Double) There is a trick to it…but I like my little big car. There is no room for trips to costco or any room left for shopping mall packages except for the floor space in the back seat. But it works. Three car seats and a Double Stroller fit in my Kia Soul!

I love the color and the size of this Kia Soul would be great to haul my dogs and kids around in too.
